Electric Cars: 2nd Home for Rats

While electric vehicles (EV) provide fuel efficiency and an alternative power source against the rising cost of oil fuel, they have also been a favorite abode of our furry critters friends which are rats. This have been the case of Cars. com guy Joe Wiesenfelder, who reported in his piece “A Rat Ate My Chevy Volt” that a rodent climbed into the engine compartment of his Chevy Volt and nibbled the wiring harness. This caused the window defroster to go bonkers together with other warning lights.

Green Car Reports is said this is but normal, since EVs attract these rats when they re plugged into the wall sockets for several hours. With the batteries warm, heat-seeking rodents climb up the engine bay for shelter.

Too bad the damage was not covered by the warranty, since it was an “act of nature”. Not only does it remind EV owners to stand guard of their garages against these rats, it also reminded me of my ‘97 Nissan Pathfinder I had years ago when I parked it in my garage after a long and rain-filled road trip. Since my engine was warm that night, I mysteriously herd creeping noise as I was sleeping. And as I went back to the garage and popped the hood to have it checked, I got scared shitless seeing so many rats settling on my engine!. I screamed like a little girl that my wife immediately ran out to the garage to check me out. When I told her what happened she didn’t sleep and laughed all night.

Charged to experience, I guess.
