Porsche Goes Cheap With The 912

Porsche cars are expensive. Heck, even the company knows that. So to appeal to a broader range of customers during the late 60’s, Porsche decided to repackage its expensive 911 vehicle line. Thus, the Porsche 912 came to be.

Even though it’s marketed as an entry-level vehicle, Porsche spared no expense in sprucing up this sports car. Under its hood, the Porche 912 sported a four-cylinder engine that was similar to the Porsche 356. It was the use of this engine that enabled the company to lower down the price of the sports car. With this engine in tow, the Porsche 912 was able to produce 90 SAE horsepower at 5,800 rpm. The engine, combined with the car’s low weight and drag, enabled the sports car to achieve improved fuel economy allowing it to save up to 30 mpg. Lastly, the 912 was given a chassis and bodyshell that was based on its 911 predecessor.

Thanks to these components, the Porsche 912 became an instant hit, even outselling the Porsche 911 during its first few years. As a result of its success, the 912 was used as police cars in Europe and also for racing. It even managed to win a European Rally Championship that was designed for series touring cars.

The Porsche 912 is really a perfect example which shows that even if the car is an entry level vehicle, if marketed right and equipped with the right set of parts, it’s bound for success.
